Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
